Furnace cleaning, the way we do it, is cleaning the parts of the furnace that air passes through: the filter slot, the blower wheel and its housing, and the base of the cabinet. It is steps 8 and 9 of our 12-step duct cleaning, included in every house and condo cleaning rather than sold as an extra.

It is not a furnace tune-up. A tune-up is an HVAC technician servicing the burners, ignition, heat exchanger and safety controls of a gas appliance, and in Ontario that work belongs to TSSA-registered contractors. We are a duct cleaning company, CNADCA certified (ID CA-00153), and we don’t do gas work. The two jobs go together well, and our guide explains which one you need.

Why it matters: every bit of air in the house goes through the blower. A wheel caked in dust moves less air, so the furnace runs longer, and whatever sits on the cabinet floor is lifted into the supply ducts each time the fan starts. Cleaning the ducts without the blower leaves the dust’s main source in place.

When the furnace side needs cleaning

  • A puff of dust when the furnace starts

Dust that has settled on the blower wheel and the cabinet floor is thrown into the supply ducts each time the fan comes on.

  • Less air from the vents than there used to be

A blower wheel caked with dust moves less air. The furnace runs longer to do the same job, and the far rooms are the first to notice.

  • Dust on the clean side of the filter

Dust that bypasses the filter through the slot it sits in (the J-channel) collects in the channel and on the blower, where no filter protects the system.

  • After a renovation

Drywall sanding and cutting fill the ducts and the blower with fine dust. Running the system after the work spreads it to every room.

  • A house that is new to you

You don't know when, or whether, the furnace blower was last cleaned. Most of the ones we open have never been touched.

  • A furnace tune-up found a dirty blower

HVAC technicians often note a dirty blower on their service report and recommend a cleaning. That cleaning is what we do.

What we clean on the furnace

  1. Power off, blower compartment open

The blower compartment is opened with the power off. We work on the air side only: the gas train, burners and heat exchanger are never touched.

  2. Filter slot (J-channel)

The slot the filter sits in collects the dust that slips past the filter's edges. It is vacuumed and wiped so the filter seals the way it should.

  3. Blower wheel and housing

The blower wheel and its housing are cleaned with compressed air and the vacuum. In many furnaces the blower assembly comes out so every blade is reached.

  4. Furnace base

Debris settles on the floor of the cabinet, below the blower, where it is picked up again every time the fan runs. It is vacuumed out.

  5. Trunks at the furnace

The supply and return trunks are opened where they meet the furnace, and the truck-mounted vacuum pulls what the air-washing loosens out of the whole system.

  6. Filter check

We look at the filter, tell you if it needs replacing, and show you where it goes. A clean blower with a clogged filter is only half a fix.

Our renovation contractor left a lot of debris in our HVAC ducts. Even with two prior duct cleaning services done by the other people, there was still a lot of dust and debris inside the ducts. Misha and Obeb from Air Force Shield spent two and a half hours removing all the dust and debris. They are nice and professional. We'd like to have them do the same job when needed.

Tayeb and Florian did a great job cleaning our ducts today. They showed up on time, were friendly and professional, and explained what they were doing as they went. They were thorough with every run and the furnace, and left the house as clean as they found it. They even sent before-and-after photos with the invoice so we could see the difference. Being in the HVAC business myself, I appreciate good work, and these two delivered. Highly recommend Air Force Shield and especially Tayeb and Florian!

Furnace Cleaning questions

Does duct cleaning include the furnace?

Ours includes the air-side parts of the furnace: the filter slot, the blower wheel and housing, and the cabinet base. It does not include the burners, the heat exchanger or any gas work.

Do you do furnace tune-ups?

No. A tune-up is combustion-side work (burners, ignition, heat exchanger, venting, safety controls), and in Ontario the TSSA requires it to be done by a TSSA-registered contractor with certified gas technicians. We clean the air side; if our pre-inspection turns up something a gas technician should see, we'll tell you.

How much does furnace cleaning cost in Toronto?

It is part of the duct cleaning price, not an extra. A house with one furnace is $399 under 2,000 sq ft and up to $499 for 4,000 sq ft, before HST. Each additional furnace is $150. A condo fan coil unit is $399 flat.

Should I clean the ducts before or after a furnace tune-up?

If the furnace is unsafe or not running properly, the HVAC technician comes first. Otherwise clean the ducts first, so the tune-up's airflow and filter checks are done on a clean system.

Can a duct cleaner open my gas furnace?

Opening the blower compartment does not touch the gas train, and it is normal duct cleaning work. Anything on the combustion side is for a TSSA-registered gas contractor, and we leave it to them.

How long does it take?

The furnace side is about twenty minutes of a house duct cleaning, which takes about an hour and a half in all. A condo takes about 45 minutes.
